Acheron Sinis: He had escorted the lady as promised..Quietly walking with her to the range..
Franz Castellan: :he padded on outside, grabbing his own bow::but he had done enough of his own practice this day and walked with them wrapped in his thoughts. It had been a complete massacre but he merely said nothing::
Lady Kessa: The line was formed of the men of the city. Those who kept the animals fed and the grain growing, the forest people and the sea people mingling when they usually did not. It was good for the village, even if the Cosians chose not to show up. Yes, it rankled. She could see the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed figures of the two younger Haraldr men at the line, tending to their bowstrings.
Acheron Sinis: Papo was armed with his sword and many other hidden weaponry. He would not compete within the contest. He stood quietly just away from Franz and Kessa, silently watching as the people of Fehu Isa and their guests conversed and took their turns in skill and competition.
Lady Kessa: The sight of the assassin made a few voices hush, whispers like swift-winged birds fluttering in the air and then what tension there was lessened a fraction. He was a friend of the Administrator and not a villain come to slay them as they played about. None who had known the scruffy Herrold could tell the sleek dark man before them now was the same. Which was likely the point.
Franz Castellan: ::he looked up then and grinned at them all::it was busy, milling around and people chatting::
Acheron Sinis: He could see the looks, the hushed whispering lips leaning from one to another. What never dawned on the commoner, was that they were safest when he was in sight.
Lady Kessa: "Sirs!" She called out after a moment, pushing back her hood so that her peripheral vision was not so obstructed. "To your lines." The crowd milling until the competitors stood at their marks, bows in hand, arrows set to the string, though none had drawn back yet. A glance toward Franz and she paused. "Do you intend to compete?" Either way, she could understand. If he did, it showed his people he was not afraid to mingle and be personable, but if he did not, it kept him an elusive thing of majesty.
Franz Castellan: of course ! ::he raised his crossbow and notched an arrow into the string and moved forward to the line::he winked at her as he did so::
Lady Kessa: His choice though, did please her. "Then get into line, my own." Her voice lowered to softness for him then lifted again." Make space for the Jarl!" and they cheered as they made a space.
Acheron Sinis: His expression was stoic...unmoved as he looked away from those staring at him. He turned his dark eyes instead to the competitors. Not being permitted to compete did not mean Papo could not enjoy the spirit of the competitions. He smiled as he watched each man line up...Seeing the excitement on their faces at the chance of proving their skills. A chance even to turn the eye of a pretty free woman their way.
Lady Kessa: The line consisted now of five. A fisherman named Olaf, the two Haraldr brothers, Gerhard and Garrick, the administrator, and a tanner called Speckle. "Draw..." Kessa called and watched them draw their bows up, and fire, the four village men just a tad faster on the draw than Franz, but that did not translate to better aim necessarily.
OnlineHost: Lady Kessa rolled 4 10-sided dice: 1 10 7 9
Franz Castellan: ::he slowly raised his bow and pulled back the string breathing in slowly to steady his aim then he released the string and the arrow flew to the target..or so he hoped::
OnlineHost: Franz Castellan rolled 1 10-sided die: 1
Scoreboard: Olaf -1/ Gerhard-10/ Garrik 7/ Speckle-9/ Franz 1
Franz Castellan: ::the arrow...went wide..::Loki::he grumbled::
Lady Kessa: The arrows thunked, the tanner coming near to the bulls eye, but the willowy blonde Haraldr hit dead center.
A cheer went up and his brother clapped his shoulder saying something about luck and each man chose a fresh arrow from the few they had each stuck into the ground by the line. Drawing taut the strings and waiting until the signal came to unleash them once more.
OnlineHost: Lady Kessa rolled 4 10-sided dice: 9 10 9 8
Franz Castellan: ::but he notched another arrow into the string::and raised the bow again::
OnlineHost: Franz Castellan rolled 1 10-sided die: 1
Lady Kessa: Olaf -10/ Gerhard-20/Garrik16/Speckle-17/Franz 2
Franz Castellan: ::he shook his head again, must have been all the excitement running through his veins. He tuned to Papo and shook his head, yet.....he would carry on, he was after all High Jarl of Fehu Isa::
Lady Kessa: Again, the young Haraldr hit the center, nearly against the arrow already there. His brother did better, but his cocky look was crushed by the sight of his brother's aim. Grumbling, he gathered up his arrow with intent to not let his brother win the new bow and arrows. The others were just enjoying, though likely the Jarl had been up late the night before, as tales of the wild banquet had been spreading through the town all day. Bows up and drawn strings twanged to send forth their wooden projectiles.
OnlineHost: Lady Kessa rolled 4 10-sided dice: 9 7 8 8
Franz Castellan: ::he raised his bow again and clicked his neck left and right then he would release the bow string and let the arrow loose, maybe now one might hit the target::
OnlineHost: Franz Castellan rolled 1 10-sided die: 1
Franz Castellan: ::Well...that should teach him to stay off the Ale from the night before the morning after::
Scoreboard: Olaf -19/ Gerhard-27/Garrick -24/Speckle-25/Franz 3
Franz Castellan: ::he would burn the bow if this carried on and then get another one and have it blessed by the rune priest::
Lady Kessa: The men all did well, including Franz who missed the target, but hit a passing urt so at least that was something. The Haraldr boys still competing more with one anther than the others, the tanner thinking about the bow and how it would help him in his hunting for skins to tan, the fisherman was doing it to look good for a lady who he knew to be watching, one he hoped to court.
Franz Castellan: ::he turned then to Kessa and gave her a cheerful wave and a thumbs up. With a bit of luck if he didn't hit the target he might next time hit a thrall and kill it::
Lady Kessa: Kessa smiled at Franz, knowing he could not be doing so badly except on purpose to make his men smile at the obviousness of it all. "Bowmen... Aim.. and Fire!" She called out with a grin, the sound of twanging splitting the air.
OnlineHost: Lady Kessa rolled 4 10-sided dice: 4 6 4 5
Franz Castellan: ::he raised his bow again and let loose the arrow::
OnlineHost: Franz Castellan rolled 1 10-sided die: 2
Franz Castellan: ::Well..fuckaduck::anyway it was better than a complete miss and he shot a thrall in the arse who had got too near the target:::
Scoreboard: Olaf -23/ Gerhard-33/Garrick-28/Speckle-30/Franz 5
Lady Kessa: The men all did a little less well, but arms were growing tired. "Last round!" She called out, knowing that by her count, it was still anyone's game. Well, almost anyone's. "Bowmen to the line... Aim...." She waited a moment more and called out "Fire!"
Acheron Sinis: He smiled as he looked on..
OnlineHost: Lady Kessa rolled 4 10-sided dice: 4 1 8 4
Acheron Sinis: He had to wonder if everyone did a little practicing at least...Well...Looked like one of them did.
Franz Castellan: ::at the shout he aimed and fired, quickly notching an arrow and letting that whiz through the air::
OnlineHost: Franz Castellan rolled 1 10-sided die: 5
Franz Castellan: ::a wild shout and cheer went up from the crowd and he praised Odin for ...something::
Scoreboard: Olaf -27/ Gerhard-32/Garrick-36/Speckle-34/Franz 10
Acheron Sinis: He licked his thumb...There was a good northern wind coming at them.
Lady Kessa: With a crow of exultation, Gerhard's arrow went wide and Garrick, by the count of points, had beaten his older brother! No more hand-me-down bows!
Franz Castellan: ::he was up until that point sweating. Hopefully Loki had vanished::
Lady Kessa: Ruffled by the elder men, Kessa watched the young man come forward to take his prize. Kessa handed over the arrows and bow. "Congratulations, Sir. Well done." She turned her grin to Franz as the young Garrik held his prize over his head and whooped as young men were wont to do as he scampered back down the hill toward his brother to show off his prize.
Franz Castellan: :mental note to self, no ale on the contest morning. He patted the young man on the shoulder and congratulated him:: well done..::he clapped ::
Lady Kessa: She looked over to Papo. "Does your caste allow you to enjoy watching?" She heard the thrall yelp like a girl when they pulled the arrow out, it hadn't gone deep, but they weren't gentle either.
Acheron Sinis: "Of course.." he smiled as he answered.. He was obviouslythere... Watching... Smiling... Enjoying. He simply would not participate.
Franz Castellan: ::he took his bow and slung it over his shoulder::he turned to look at the young man and his family::he chuckled and grinned:: Well...Loki was around for my shots ::that was his excuse and he was sticking to it::
KyrstenErikdotir: ::comes striding down to the archery range to see who won and smiles when she sees it is Garrick, applauding him proudly and giving a stern look to his older brother until he congratulates the victor as well::
Lady Kessa: Seeing the family made her smile. It was good to see sons and their mother both different but wanting her to be proud of them, the older pointing out his two bulls-eyes even as she made him congratulate Garrick. "I think it is a good thing, bringing the people out, if nothing else."
Acheron Sinis: He then quietly looked to a woman approaching the gathering.
Lady Kessa: She nodded softly, looking up at Papo, then following his eyes. "The family of the Lady Elise." She didn't think he needed introduction, but in case, she would give it.
Franz Castellan: I think I shall add my bow to the fire later and get another one with better string action :he grinned::
Acheron Sinis: He nodded hearing 'Elise'. He could imagine the woman Krysten, was feeling some shame of Elise's actions and to the subsequent upcoming judgments.
Lady Kessa: "She might like to know that Elise is well. If she is not allowed to visit, that is." Her eyes not diverting from the clique of family at the base of the small hill, still distant but near enough to hail if need arose.
KyrstenErikdotir: Tal, Jarl. I see my sons do well.
Franz Castellan: Tal Kyrsten. Yes, better than I. ::Another pat to the winner's shoulder, then he moved off to mingle with the crowds and would heartily joke with them about the luck he had and gradually disappear out of view::
Acheron Sinis: "Family is permitted..Only one at a time." He spoke low to her..."And a guard must be present."
Lady Kessa: "Ah. Good." She was glad for that comfort at least. "Your sons do your family great honor, Lady Kyrsten!" She called down to her as Franz no doubt was off to stomp his bow into toothpicks.
KyrstenErikdotir: ::waves to Kessa and walks over to join her:: Tal. So I see. It is good that they have practiced so much.
Franz Castellan: :he padded on outside, grabbing his own bow::but he had done enough of his own practice this day and walked with them wrapped in his thoughts. It had been a complete massacre but he merely said nothing::
